I was reading something awhile ago, and the least used character class was female monk, and the most common was female necromancer.

I disagree with all the people saying that sin is one of the least popular classes. Everyone I know has an assassin. I love mine.

I have nine character slots, and no assassin or mesmer. I think male mesmers are probably the rarest character.

I'd say Mesmer and Para followed by Rit, being they're not defined in traditional rolls, but much more unique and subtle in play-style. They have far greater utility than the other classes, but are not so easily understood.
I run only Paras and Mesmer's in my Hero line up. They're unstoppable in the right combination. I think General Morgan is an Indomitable Survivor, he's impossible to kill.

Tanking is irrelevant, for the most part, and physicals have higher sustainable DPS against a single target.

dont really know what people prefer to play but for me my favorite professions are All,each profession has something different to enjoy about it and when i get tired of playing lets say warrior i just switch to another of mi char. But when going form tow to town i would say yes mesmers seem to be the minority imo,i could be wrong tho.

Paragons are pretty uncommon. I don't buy into the idea that Mesmer is the least popular - I see them sprinkled around everywhere. Same goes for Assassin.

Paragons are definitely rare in PvE. However, I find it odd. I love using my paragon. Steamrolls thru everything (5 missions short of Legendary Guardian).
My Rit hasn't seen playinig time lately, although he's a fun character.
My least used are my Dervish and Necro. The Necro because everyone seems to play one (not needed for anything).

Sustainable single-target DPS is more or less meaningless in PvE (the context of your post), where you want things to be exploding left and right. Excepting the Dragon Slash/Save Yourselves build, warriors have no place in PvE.
